The sports guru and author of several bestsellers is not only a qualified sports scientist, but also a triathlon professional and fifteen (!) Iron man finisher. If you can do that, you have to know how fitness works. We asked the most popular motivational speaker in Germany five questions about fitness, sport and health.
What time of the day are we most productive?
It always depends on what you want to achieve. In short: if you want to lose weight, it makes sense to exercise before breakfast. Between 3 and 6 p.m. we have most growth hormones – strength training is particularly effective for building muscle. The wedding of the heart, however, takes place between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. – this is where intensive endurance training is most efficient, provided that you can fall asleep easily afterwards.
Is the biorhythm the same for everyone?
We can roughly follow the general biorhythm. But every internal clock ticks a little differently and depends heavily on the respective daily routine: When do I get up, when do I go to bed, when do I have to perform …? My individual biorhythm adapts to my daily rhythm, so to speak. Top athletes use this phenomenon. In preparation, you train at exactly the time of day that a competition is due. This is how you develop the right service at the right time.
What if my training recommendations don’t fit into my daily routine?
Stay relaxed. It is more important than optimal training to train at all. Sport has to fit into your life. There’s no point in burning extra fat jogging at 7 a.m. when you want to get your kids ready for school. Maybe it suits you better at 7 p.m. – every minute counts, no matter when you do it.
How do I get over the midday low?
With light fare! That means no or hardly any carbohydrates (e.g. pasta, bread, rice) but more protein and fiber (e.g. a salad with fish or meat or an omelette with lots of vegetables). A nap in the afternoon is also a real source of power. It is important, however, that it does not last longer than 10 minutes – otherwise you will enter the deep sleep phase and that will make you really tired. A walk in the fresh air also works wonders.
Is there a certain time of year when it is best to start a new sport?
No matter whether summer or winter – there is only one perfect time: Now! Don’t put off your goal any longer. Today is the best day to bring more exercise into your life. Schedule sports like an appointment. Prepare yourself the night before – then you won’t get a sudden excuse. Tip for working people: Put your sports bag in the car right away and drive to training right after work.
