Eating chocolate cake as part of a full breakfast may help you lose weight, scientists say. It sounds too good to be true, but scientists say that having dessert burns calories, reports The Telegraph. The morning is the best time to consume sweets because it is when the metabolism is most active and we have the rest of the day to burn those calories, according to a study.
Eating cookies or chocolate as part of a breakfast that includes protein and carbohydrates also helps curb the craving for sweets afterward.
The researchers divided 193 clinically obese and non-diabetic people into two groups who ate a low-carbohydrate diet that included either a 300-calorie breakfast or a 600-calorie breakfast, which included a chocolate cake for dessert.
By the middle of the 32-week study, both groups had lost an average of 14 kilos per person. But in the second half of the study, the low-carb group gained an average of 10 kilos per person – while those who ate dessert lost another 7 kilos each.
In the end, those who had eaten a 600-calorie breakfast lost an average of 18 kilos more per person than their peers in the other group.
Although both groups consumed the same calories daily, 1,600 men and 1,400 women, the participants on the low-carbohydrate diet were less satisfied and did not feel full, explains Professor , from Tel Aviv University. Their cravings for sugars and carbohydrates were more intense and eventually they cheated on the diet plan.
This also suggests that the dessert group was more successful in maintaining weight, say the researchers, whose findings have been published in the journal Steroids.
